Ending Gun Violence and Mass Shootings

In the past year, almost 40,000 people were victims of gun violence, and 60 percent of these were self-inflicted. Gun violence is a uniquely American problem, and Americans are in near unanimous agreement that we do something about it - a national poll conducted. A national poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that 94% of Americans support universal background checks.

Assault Weapons Ban & Buyback

Semiautomatic assault weapons (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding devices (LACFD) are weapons of war, and they have no place among civilians. More people die in mass shootings when the shooter is using a semi-automatic rifle. Done Waiting supports the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, which makes it illegal to manufacture, sell, and possess SAWs and LCAFDs, in addition to an assault weapons buyback to reduce the number of existing assault weapons. The legislature must wake up and implement this, and Done Waiting will support these reforms, as well as buybacks of assault weapons.

Universal Background checks

Americans almost unanimously support universal background checks -- 94 percent, according to a poll by Quinnipiac University. However, despite bipartisan support, Republican-led legislatures have voted against background checks. Done Waiting supports a Universal Background Check system built upon a national registry of firearms.

Waiting Period

In 2017, almost 40,000 people were killed because of a firearm, and 60% of these were suicides. In fact, 90 percent of gun suicide attempts result in death, accounting for half of all suicides annually. Access to a firearm is one of the biggest factors in determining whether someone will successfully commit suicide.

Done Waiting supports a federal waiting period to prevent impulsive acts of gun violence, including gun suicides.

End the Stranglehold of the NRA On Our Nation’s Politicians

There are fewer institutions that have a stronger sway on politicians than the NRA. Many politicians will never fight against the NRA because they are concerned about losing their position, influence, and campaign contributions. Done Waiting supports action that would prevent politicians from taking any money from the gun lobby.

Domestic Gun Violence and Mass Shootings

1 million women in this country today have been shot at by their partner. Done Waiting believes in closing the Boyfriend Loophole, which allows abusers to continue to have access to a gun after being convicted of domestic abuse or are under a restraining order for abuse. We must also close the Charleston Loophole, which allows abusers to purchase a gun after waiting on a background check for three business days if the background check was not completed during that time.
