LGBTQIA+ Ally

Done Waiting resoundingly rejects discrimination against any individual on any basis including sexual orientation and gender identity. The current President has rescinded the guidance protecting the rights of trans students in federally funded schools and wants to take away the rights of trans people to serve in the United States military. Republicans at every level of government are eager to make trans and non-binary people targets for persecution and routinely draft legislation that will deny people their rights to basic housing, healthcare, and education on the basis of their gender identity and sexual orientation.

Done Waiting supports the Equality Act, which would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals, including housing, employment, credit, education, safe public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service.

Discrimination at both the local and federal level undeniably impact queer and trans people from a young age. This is reflected in high rates of homelessness, incarceration, and substance abuse in the LGBTQIA+ youth population. Done Waiting will fight to defend the civil and human rights of all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Mental health

    • Lesbian, gay, and bisexual high schoolers are 5 times more likely to attempt suicide than peers.

    • Done Waiting supports increasing the number of mandated counselors in schools.

    • About 50% of transgender adults have contemplated suicide in the past year.

    • Done Waiting supports requiring LGBTQ specific training for healthcare providers, specifically when it comes to recognizing issues of mental health.

    • Done Waiting also supports sweeping gun legislation (policy brief found here) that will make it harder for those with mental health struggles to access guns.

  • Inclusive and Accurate Sex Education

    • Done Waiting will attempt to pass federal legislation to adopt a comprehensive sex education curriculum.

    • Done Waiting supports providing birth control and STI prevention tools to high schools, and through Medicare for All, birth control will be provided by the government.

    • Done Waiting also supports passing federal legislation to allow anyone to buy condoms at any age as a public health intervention to increase STI prevention in minors.

  • Military Service

    • The efforts to ban trans people from the military by the Trump administration are despicable. Trans people have been in the military for decades without any issues, making these attacks on their civil liberties not only bigoted but baseless.

    • Done Waiting affirms the right of trans people to serve in the military without any difficulties or federal barriers, as well as ensuring that any medical procedures including gender transitioning are paid for.

    • Many LGBT+ veterans cite dissatisfaction with the Veterans Affairs healthcare system, with only 28 percent of them stating feeling welcomed by the VA as LGBT veterans. Done Waiting supports a structural retraining of VA health officials to better assess LGBT veterans and to be able to address their specific concerns.

  • Feeling Comfortable in Public Spaces

    • Any individual should be able to use the bathroom they feel most comfortable using. The federal government must provide grants and incentives to encourage renovations for gender neutral bathrooms, specifically in public schools.

  • Justice for Hate Crimes

    • There are no hate crime laws in Michigan that cover gender identity or sexual orientation.

    • 17% of hate attacks against property and persons are motivated by sexual orientation.

    • These hate crimes are often committed against transgender or non-binary people. Hate crimes, as well as any violence committed against the trans community, likely goes unreported or misreported.

    • Done Waiting supports stronger prosecution and investigation into hate crimes.

  • Inclusive Healthcare System

    • Done Waiting supports expanding the healthcare system to be inclusive and educated on the specific issues that the LGBTQ+ community can face when sick or attempting to seek treatment.

    • Doctors are often uneducated on topics such as hormone therapy, safe sex, and assumptions concerning the LGBTQ+ community.

    • Gender affirming surgery would be covered under Medicare for All.

    • Done Waiting supports healthcare as a human right. Currently, children can be covered under their parents’ health insurance plan until they turn 26 years old. However, healthcare is a right, and it should not depend on your age, or your parents. Currently, 34 states allow for minors to apply for health insurance with their parents’ consent. Done Waiting supports making it legal for all minors to apply for health insurance (including Medicare+Medicaid) in all 50 states and territories. Furthermore, Done Waiting supports Medicare for All, which would provide health insurance automatically to all people in the United States.

    • President Trump’s Administration is currently attempting to expand the Conscience Rule which allows for healthcare providers to discriminate on the basis of religious or nonreligious moral code. This will potentially allow for providers to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community. Done Waiting does not support the strengthening of this rule.

      • This is a thinly veiled attempt to weaken abortion services in this country and lessen access to basic health care for LGBTQ+ Americans.
