Green New Deal and Better Transportation

Climate Change will ravage our environment and economy if we do not take action. Currently, massive corporations are incentivized to destroy the environment.

This cannot continue. The IPCC states that we must enact sweeping change right now, in order to bring our entire economy away from fossil fuel dependency and use. This means we must pass a Green New Deal.

Done Waiting supports the Green New Deal, and other policies which will:

  • Create 20 million green, unionized jobs in renewable power plants, energy efficiency retrofitting, and construction.

    • Create new good paying union jobs across steel, energy efficiency retrofitting, coding, server farms, auto manufacturing, construction, and renewable power plants.

    • Provide a just transition for workers in the fossil fuel industry. We can’t turn our back on these workers and treat them as collateral damage on the path to a new world. We will guarantee 5 years of fossil fuel workers’ current salaries during the transition. For any displaced worker, we will also provide priority job placement, housing assistance, healthcare, job training, and pension support. We will also provide support for early retirement for those who choose or need it.

  • Retrofit energy efficient public housing powered by renewable energy by spending $172 billion over 10 years.

  • Reach 100% renewable energy for transportation and electricity by 2030 and complete decarbonization of the economy by 2050.

  • Declare climate change as a national emergency.

  • Reauthorize and fund the Civilian Conservation Corp as well as the Land and Water Conservation Corps to provide green infrastructure and good paying jobs.

  • Rejoin the Paris agreement and providing 200 billion to the Green Climate Fund.

  • Allow the EPA to regulate carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons under the Clean Air Act.

  • Help low and moderate income families and small businesses trade in their fossil fuel dependent vehicles for fully electric alternatives by providing $2.09 trillion in grants.

  • Spend $85.6 billion on building up electric vehicle charging station infrastructure.

  • Provide $407 billion in grants to help school districts transition to fully electric vehicles which not only will save school districts money on fuel and repair costs but also will spare our children from carcinogenic diesel exhaust.

  • Give a $300 billion dollar investment in public transportation to increase ridership, and to keep public transportation affordable and accessible to people with disabilities and all communities, including seniors.

  • Give a $607 billion dollar investment in a regional high-speed rail system.

  • Create a Climate Justice Resiliency Fund.

  • Pass the WATER Act which would provide up to $34 Billion for numerous clean water initiatives.

Climate change is not something we can ignore. It is a crisis of humanity. California is on fire, the Midwest is flooding, and we are experiencing devastating hurricanes. Now, we are also facing one of the longest periods of high unemployment in history due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We must take a page from FDR during the Great Depression when he passed the New Deal. FDR's New Deal established government programs to pay unemployed people good wages to do things that were good for our society and government, like plant trees. We need to pass a Green New Deal now not only because economists estimate that if we take no action we will lose $34.5 trillion in economic activity by the end of the century due to climate change, but also because we need to employ millions of people who lost their jobs due to COVID-19.

These policies were inspired by the Green New Deal Plan proposed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
